How We Help

FAQs

  • What is the Tina Cowley reading programme?

Comprehensive Reading Skills: The program works on developing a full range of reading abilities, from foundational elements to advanced comprehension.

Confidence Building: A key goal is to boost a child's self-esteem and confidence in their reading and learning capabilities.

Lifelong Love of Reading: Beyond just technical skills, the program strives to foster a genuine enjoyment and passion for reading that lasts a lifetime.

Scientific Assessments: They begin with a scientific evaluation to accurately determine a child's reading level and identify specific areas that need attention. This includes reading assessments and brain profiling.

Individualised Programs: Programs are tailored to each student's unique needs, ensuring personalised support and targeted interventions.

Foundational Skills: Work is done on the basic building blocks of reading, such as phonemic awareness (understanding sounds in words).

Cognitive Skills Enhancement: The program addresses underlying cognitive abilities crucial for learning, such as auditory and visual processing strategies, working memory, focus, memory, and problem-solving.

Reading Fluency: Emphasis is placed on improving reading speed, accuracy, and expression to make reading effortless and enjoyable.

Study Skills: For older students, programs may also include study methods to help them summarise, plan, and learn more effectively based on their brain dominance

  • Who can benefit from the centre and the therapy?

All learners, not only readers who struggle.

Early identification and intervention are crucial for a child's academic success. They aim to help learners not just function, but truly excel in their studies by building a strong foundation in reading and related cognitive skills.

Improved Concentration & Attention: Regular reading and targeted exercises strengthen a child's ability to focus for longer periods, a skill transferable to all academic subjects and daily tasks.

Improving Memory: Following storylines, retaining facts, and making connections between ideas actively exercises both short-term and long-term memory.

Stronger Problem-Solving Skills: Engaging with narratives and understanding complex texts encourages analytical thinking and the ability to find solutions.

Increased General Knowledge: Exposure to diverse books and topics naturally expands a child's understanding of the world around them.

Higher Self-Esteem & Confidence: Overcoming reading challenges and experiencing success builds immense self-worth, reducing anxiety related to schoolwork.

Developed Empathy: Through stories, children learn to understand different perspectives, emotions, and cultures, fostering compassion and social awareness.

  • How does the programme work?

An initial evaluation determines the learner’s reading speed, comehension and basic, comprehensionreading skills. Feedback is given to the parents and the learner is placed in a reading programme suitable for his/her specific level. Learners’ progress is monitored and they receive a progress report at the end of each quarter (quarter 1-3). Reading evaluation, as well as therapy, takes place in both Afrikaans and English. Classes are two 45-minute sessions: a reading and comprehension class, and a basic  reading skills and memory methods class.

    ● Reading and Comprehension Class

During these sessions each learner works individually and independantly on a computer. The reading programme focuses on improving their reading speed, spelling and comprehension.

    ● Basic Reading Skills and Memory Methods Class

This is a group class presented with the aid of an interactive smartboard. The basic reading skills are addressed, namely spatial orientation, visual and auditory memory, laterality, form perception and sequencing. These basic reading skills do not only influence a learner’s reading ability, but also his/her general functioning in class. We also do eye kinetics to strengthen the eye muscles specifically needed for reading.

  • Are there any procedures before enrolling?

We do an evaluation to determine a child’s reading level and the specific areas that need attention.

We test the scientific subsections of reading. We address the areas identified during the evaluation to further support the leaner in order to help learners excel in their reading.

We discuss the results with the parents and then decide on an appropriate time slot for your child.

    ● Your child will attend one class of  45 - 90 minutes per week depending on their age.

  • What languages does your programme support?

Our programme currently supports both English and Afrikaans.

  • Do you offer online session?

Five black stars.

My child felt anxious about reading in front of others, but the gentle approach at Tina Cowley made all the difference. The caring teachers create such a safe and positive space. Now she can’t wait to share what she’s learned each week!

Five black stars in a row.

When Liam first started at Tina Cowley, he avoided books completely. Now he reads to us every night before bed and even corrects our pronunciation! The change in his confidence and enthusiasm is unbelievable. We couldn’t be happier. Thank you, Elnette for making such a big difference in Liam's life.
